Derek put a 50 yard shot on this trophy hog after sneeking through a bunch of brush right along the creek. Using the rushing water as an advantage so the hogs couldnt hear them. Dwight finally said shoot. One shot and down he went.
Steve’s trophy hog he took. Just what he was after. 150 yard shot through the heart and it still ran a 100 yards, Before it fell over.

It hands down is the most fun I have had in the past 20 years. My guide Derek Wise has great enthusiasm for his work and it was contagious. We got onto group after group on the first day of the hunt, I could hardly believe it. He knew where to look and he knew sign well (of course he has great mentors). I had several good sneaks that took us within 50 yards of pigs and some hard-charging chases in the Ranger. It was a blast.There is an amazing abundance of wildlife on the ranch! Derek and I had a golden eagle come right over the top of us on top of one of the ridges plus deer, coyote, squirrels, and more importantly pigs were spotted all over. I think it really speaks to your responsible game management, hunting practices, and ethics.
Bonuses included great conversations with the other guides and Tom and Dwight both saved my hunt with the loan of their rifles when mine had a mechanical failure. Tom’s cooking is crazy good, you are a serious cowboy gourmet and the lodge is quite comfortable. Crystal knows pigs and if you’re listening you’re going to increase your opportunity by ten-fold.
Of course the highlight of it all is when Derek from the top of a ridge spotted a boar 560 yards away next to one of the bass ponds below and turned and looked at me and said “PIG!” We spotted another pig and he looked at me and said “WE GOTTA GO NOW!”
So we screamed down the ridge in the Ranger and started our sneak into the wind and after getting startled by bass jumping in the creek at our feet, jumping a deer, dealing with skittery cows, and working passed three sows and a truckload of screaming piglets we found ourselves 40 yards from 290 pounds of potentially angry bacon casually rooting in the grass. Derek directed the scene and honestly as I was looking at the ass end of that pig for 10 minutes waiting for it to expose his chest I wasn’t nervous until Derek lowered his glasses and whispered “he’s got really big tusks.” At that point the knees started shaking and soon after I drilled the boar with Dwight’s 270 and then again as it ran down the dam and was down soon after.

Special thanks to Derek for putting me onto a dream pig (3inch tusks uppers and lowers). My apologies to the eager and willing Tucker and Drew (pig dawgs extraordinaire) for not being able to chase that pig down.

This year it has rained alot . Now that its just about done raining. The grass is growing like crazy. Bringing in tons of game on to the ranch and providing plenty of feed for all kinds of game animals.
We have had a great start for 2010. The good rains have made for plenty of feed. lots of nice fat healthy hogs.
